Fire Hydrant Flushing

Algona Municipal Utilities conducts a regular hydrant flushing program each spring and fall. The purpose of the program is to dislodge any sediment in underground water mains and check hydrants for proper functioning, as recommended by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

AMU recommends that customers do not plan any clothes washing while AMU flushes hydrants that day. The flushing of fire hydrants in your area may temporarily discolor water which may stain clothes being laundered. If clothes are washed in discolored water, keep them wet and rewash.

AMU appreciates the cooperation of customers in this water system flushing program.

Fire Hydrant Color Codes

Algona Municipal Utilities has painted fire hydrants with a base color of safety yellow to make them easily identifiable by the Algona Fire Department. The tops and caps of hydrants will be painted light blue, green, orange, or red to signify the different flows of each hydrants. By painting the caps and tops different colors, the fire hydrants meet current industry standards for color coding.
